Christine Schulz
California Calling 2

/ 16

In her »California Calling« series, Christine Schulz superimposes travel experiences with memories from films. Using video and overhead projections she combines personal shoots with film stills from true classics such as Vertigo or Zabriskie Point. The artist makes use of walls, ceilings and architectural characteristics of the exhibition space as a large-format projection surface. Simple constructs of found OSB boards give the room additional structure. Besides the multimedia installation Schulz shows photo collages, that take up the basic motive of 'media images', which she breaks up, strips off their specific context and puts them into new, artificial arrangements.

Christine Schulz explores in her work the relationship between image and reality and how they influence each other. Images document as well as create reality. Constants, certainties, realities seem increasingly cursory in a society over-flooded by media production in spin cycle. Schulz illustrates this fleetingness by means of light projections and her multi-layer superimpositions, refractions and sequencing, include the viewer into a sensually perceivable space of imagery.

Christine Schulz studied Fine Arts at the HBK Braunschweig and graduated in 2003 as master student of John Armleder. In 2001 she was awarded the Förderpreis der Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven and received a grant at the Künstlerhäuser Worpswede in 2004. Her work has been shown in numerous group and solo exhibitions, e.g. at Kunstverein Wolfenbüttel, Kunstverein Leverkusen Schloss Morsbroich, Kölnischen Kunstverein, Kunstmuseum Mülheim and Kunsthalle Düsseldorf. Her work has been shown internationally – inter alia - in Lissabon, Mexico City and New York. Most recently, the Kunstverein Bochum presented one of her installations on this year’s Emscher Kunst exhibition.
