Korean artist Wonkun Jun understands his paintings as manifested sentiment, mood and concentration. He describes their creation as a process of abstinence and personal restraint in the work on the canvas. In a complex procedure, thin layers of colour are repeatedly applied on the canvas and washed out and off with water. The remaining colour shapes resemble the formal clarity of geometric abstraction, but Jun combines them with a distinct, characteristic tenderness and fleetingness derived from the artist's asian roots.
Wonkun Jun was born in 1970 in Seoul, South Korea. He studied Painting at the Chugye-Academy of Fine Arts in Seoul, at the HBK Braunschweig and Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Germany. In 2003 he graduated as master student of Helmuth Federle in Dusseldorf. His works have been shown in exhibitons in South Korea and Germany, among others at the Kunstverein Duisburg and at the Verein für aktuelle Kunst, Oberhausen.
