Volker Hermes
Fly like Paper (Für Mira)

In his art Volker Hermes works on subject areas which he approaches in a conceptual as well as a direct painterly way. The only motif of his new solo exhibition is the paper plane as a metaphor for dealing with a pivotal personal experience. Through intense research, Hermes wrenches from this motif a whole palette of artistic approaches and emotions. His works speak of the freedom of letting go and the chaos of an unpredictable flight. To illustrate the universal aspect of sensation individual to each of us, Hermes integrates the thoughts of representatives of different professional fields like physicist and corporate consultant Jürgen Kluge, comedian Christian Ehring, artist Rita McBride, mathematician Günter M. Ziegler, philosopher Dieter Mersch and stage designer Christof Hetzer in his new artworks, which comprise drawings, paintings and photographs.

Volker Hermes studied painting with Dieter Krieg at Kunstakademie Dusseldorf, where he still lives and works. His works are expression of an intense – virtually scientific – engagement. Pictorial solutions have to be derived from a basic artistic principle: “To me, it is sufficient if the observer senses this unconsciously. You do not need to know everything, but you can sense a lot.”
